FAQ

Common Questions & Manufacturing Protocols:
Clarity is the foundation of a successful project. Below, you will find detailed answers regarding our production lead times, freight logistics, material specifications, and trade account benefits.

Production & Lead Times

What is your standard lead time for orders?

Because we manufacture our components in-house, lead times vary based on complexity. Standard stock items (like Rectangular Red Oak Treads) typically ship within 3-5 business days. Custom orders, including Winder Treads, Landing Platforms, or specific species like Walnut and Hickory, generally require 2-3 weeks for milling. Please check your specific quote for the most accurate estimate.

Yes, expedited ‘Rush Milling’ is available for time-sensitive projects for an additional fee. Availability depends on current shop capacity and lumber stock. Please contact our office immediately at 713.462.5045 if you require a rush order.

All Unique Wood Products components are proudly manufactured in the USA at our facility in Houston, Texas. With over 35 years of manufacturing expertise, we control the entire quality process from rough lumber to final sanding.

Orders enter our production queue 24 hours after placement. You may make changes or cancel for a full refund within that 24-hour window. Once the wood has been cut or glued, the order is considered ‘In Production’ and cannot be modified.

Shipping & Logistics

How are stair treads shipped?

Small orders (such as hardware or single treads cut under 48 inches) may ship via Ground carriers (FedEx/UPS). However, most stair part orders are heavy and bulky, requiring LTL (Less-Than-Truckload) Freight. These orders arrive on a pallet via a tractor-trailer.

For freight shipments, the driver’s responsibility ends at the curb. They will lower the pallet to the ground using a liftgate, but they will not carry materials into your garage, home, or job site. We strongly recommend having at least two people available upon delivery to move the materials indoors.

You must inspect the pallet while the driver is present. If you see visible damage, write ‘DAMAGED’ on the Bill of Lading (delivery receipt) before signing. If you discover concealed damage after opening the package, you must notify us within 24 hours. Claims made after this window are often denied by the carrier.

Currently, we ship to all 48 contiguous United States. For shipments to Canada, Hawaii, or Alaska, please contact us directly for a custom freight quote.

Product & Technical

What is the difference between 8070 and 8071 Treads?

The 8070 Tread is a standard 1-inch thick tread designed for new construction (installing directly onto rough framing). The 8071 Tread is a Retro-Fit tread (typically 5/8″ or 3/4″ thick) featuring a drop-nose, designed to cap/overlay an existing stair without removing the old structure.

Our treads arrive unfinished but professionally sanded to 120-grit. This prepares the wood to accept stain or sealer immediately. We recommend a final light sanding before applying your specific finish to ensure the best bond.

Wood is an organic material. Variations in grain pattern, mineral streaks, and color tone are inherent to hardwood and are not defects. For example, Hickory creates a rustic ‘calico’ look with high contrast, while Maple may have sugar streaks. We do not paint or stain our wood to hide these natural characteristics.

A ‘Return’ is a mitered end piece added to the side of a tread when the staircase is open (not against a wall).

  • Open Left: You need a Left Return.

  • Open Right: You need a Right Return.

  • Boxed Stairs (Wall on both sides): You need No Returns.

Installation & Care

Do I need to let the wood acclimate?

Yes. Hardwood is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture. You must allow the treads and millwork to sit in the installation environment (with HVAC running) for 3-5 days prior to installation. Installing ‘shocked’ wood immediately can lead to warping or cracking.

To maintain the structural integrity of solid wood millwork, interior relative humidity should be kept between 35% and 55%. Levels below 35% can cause shrinking and checking, while levels above 55% can cause cupping.

While many of our customers are skilled DIYers, solid hardwood stair installation requires precise cutting and knowledge of carpentry. For complex layouts, winders, or curved rails, we recommend hiring a professional finish carpenter.
